3 Common Reasons for Hair Loss! Stop it in it’s Tracks Naturally!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair! Ouch! If hearing that line from the famous children’s story makes you cringe–let me help! There are tons of different reason why people experience hair loss, too many to count but some of the most common reasons are simple to fix! Let’s dive right in and get to those remedies so you can grow your locks like Rapunzel!

*Becoming a Vegetarian!

I had a terrible experience a few years ago that made me not be able to eat meat. You don’t even want to know–really, I will spare you. So, I stopped eating it completely for the first time in my life–not something I recommend to do so abruptly! This was not the smartest move I ever made, besides giving myself a huge lack of protein. I also gave myself a huge lack of B-Vitamins. Meat is one of the biggest suppliers of B Vitamins to your body. They are crucial to your nervous system and energy supply because they help break down food for energy. Lack of B vitamins can easily result in hair loss.

Remedy: Taking a B-Complex supplement will help counter this lack of B’s if you are currently switching over to the Vegan side of life. I’ve been taking the Now brand for these, they don’t smell enticing but at least you don’t have to chew them! B vitamins are water soluble meaning your body will just get rid of what it doesn’t need.

*Iron Deficiency!

This is such a common one that a lot of people over look. Put the Rogain back! You might just be lacking iron! Low iron levels can cause hair loss and depending on how low your iron is it may take weeks to months to build the iron back up in your body. If you are low, you might also be experiencing some of these symptoms: fatigue, headaches, dizziness, pale skin, and cold hands and feet. If you got a test for anemia from your doctor that came back negative–ask him if your Iron is still on the low end–you don’t have to be completely anemic to experience hair loss from lack of Iron! 

Remedy: Garden of Life Raw Iron (raw, vegan, gluten and dairy free) This is a naturally derived Iron supplement. Non-natural one’s can cause severe stomach upset. These didn’t cause me any stomach issues. An Iron supplement is also crucial if you are becoming vegan, at least for the transitional phase.

   Stress can be a huge contributor to why you might be shedding hair. Losing a loved one, starting a new job, divorce, strife in the home can all cause stress related hair loss. This is the most difficult one to control, especially for those work-a-holics (guilty as charged) who just don’t know when to stop. Taking up a healthy coping mechanism is crucial. Do whatever you do to de-stress: take more walks, get outdoors, read, sip camomile tea, take a bath…do whatever works for you! For me it’s running–it’s my therapy! If I’m stressed I just go on a good run, pray without any distractions, and the stress is gone. Also, you may notice that your hair sheds after a stressful season comes to an end–very common. For me this happened after my Grandfather went to Heaven.

Remedy: Biotin-I’ve been taking Biotin since college. It makes my hair grow so fast and will help to counter shedding during stressful situations. As a bonus you will also notice stronger nails-love that! I love the Solgar Vegetable Biotin 5,000mcg  (wheat, dairy, gluten free and Vegetarian) for this–it has worked wonderfully for me. My hair grows like a weed and my nails are super strong!

    Glad you mentioned vegetarianism. It’s not well known that vegetarians and vegans can become B12 deficient from not eating a varied diet. It’s especially scary because the neurologic effects are not reversible.
